The Drum

Today we were learning about the drum! We learned that First Nations people used the drum during Powwows! The drum creates music for us to sing or dance to. We didn't use a "First Nations" drum but this drum works well. 
We talked about how a circle is very important to the First Nation culture. It means you are all equal, and lots of life is circular (the circle of life, life cycles, water cycles, seasons, etc). 
We talked about how a Powwow is like a big dance and drum party the First Nations people have. We had lots of fun dancing and singing with the drum!! 
We experimented with sound and took turns making repeating patterns, repeating the rhythm or beat, moved fast and slow and moved high and low. We also experimented with loud and soft sounds on the drum. We were able to use both Music and Dance outcomes in this lesson!!
