Métis Vest

A few days ago, we learned about the Métis people!

We read a story called, "The Flower Beadwork People" by Sherry Farrell Racette. 

We learned what Métis means, and why beads and colours were so important to them. We learned that the Métis women learned about silk thread embriodery and beadwork from a French nun who came to live in a Métis community. The Métis women used some of the trade goods that came to Canada. They experimented with silk thread, cloth, ribbon and beads. The Métis people were given a new name by the Dakota people. Their new name was, "The Flower Beadwork People." 

We coloured our vests and then used glue, sequins, and gemstones to make our vests colourful like the Métis people make their clothes!
