Daily 5

Today was hat or gum day to raise donations for the NICU! We talked about what the NICU is and learned that it is a newborn nursery where babies go who need some extra care when they are born. Monday we have a special visitor coming to talk to our school about what the NICU is. She might ask how many of us were in the NICU when we were born! Feel free to talk with your child about if they were in the NICU when they were born! Lots of us chewed gum and some of us wore a hat! Look below to see who wore a hat! 

Today we did more Daily 5! (Except we haven't gotten to the 5th section yet, so technically it's Daily 4!!) Last week we had Daily 3, so this week we added one more so we could work on our transitions from centre to centre!

The Kinders did absolutely amazing transitioning!!! I have a big timer leaning against the board and I set each centre for 6 minutes (usually we will do a little longer, but we had some things to do today prior to Daily 5). After 6 minutes, the big timer beeps and I didn't even need to remind my Kinders what to do!! The quickly and quietly cleaned up their centre and went back to the carpet to wait for their next centre they would be going to!

Daily 4

1st centre - Word Work! For Word Work today, the kids went fishing for letters!

Our 1st centre is Word Work! Today the Kinders went fishing for letters! Each child (or pair) gets a game board with lower case letters on it. Then, when it's their turn, they use the magnetic fishing rod and fish for a letter in the pond! When they pull a letter out, they have to match it on their board. If their board doesn't have that letter then they just throw the letter back into the fishing pond!

2nd centre - Work on Writing! For Work on Writing the kids wrote in their journals!

Our second centre is Work on Writing. For this centre, we use our journals and write down anything we want - as long as it's printing! We can walk around the room and find words or numbers or even letters of the alphabet to write down in our journals! It's really fun! Look at how hard we are working on our printing!

3rd centre - Read to Someone.  For this centre we read with a partner

Our 3rd centre is Read to Someone. We are still learning about this centre. We learned that you need to sit with a partner, choose a book together, and share reading. This month we are working on our reading strategy of "Eagle Eye." Eagle Eye means that we look for clues about what the pictures are to read the book! Since we are in Kindergarten, most of us can't read words yet, so we can read using the pictures. That's something we can all do!

4th centre - Read to Self. For this centre we find a book and read it by ourselves!

 Our 4th and last centre we used today is Read to Self. In this centre we find a book, find a place in the room, and quietly read by ourselves. We don't talk or sit with a partner. See the wonderful examples below of Read to Self!
